Why are women so critical of men wearing practical for swimming swimwear? Masculophobia? Women have a wide variety of swimwear to suit their taste. They have their string bikinis precariously tied together with shoestrings, more practical bikinis, boy-shorts, tankinis and one piece malliots and tank suits. All very revealing. Even the most conservative of womens swimwear the skirted tank suit is leg baring and form fitting. However with women it appears the only acceptable swimsuit for a man are those baggy knee-length board shorts, what I call "wading trousers". They are very impracticle for swimming, create a lot of drag in the water and when exiting the pool for any amount of time they are very uncomfortable and drip for hours. When a woman sees a man wearing a racer brief, or a square-cut or other short or form fitting swimsuit practical and more comfortable for water activity she draws her face in disgust or that gives that half hidden impolite giggle....all while wearing their short, often extremely skanty swimwear. Men will do almost anything to win the adoration of women, even if it's stupid. More men would probably prefer and wear a more practical swimsuit if it were not for the women's prejudice against us being men. I'm not talking about males wearing string bikinis, thongs or the real skimpy suits but racer suits (brief style) and fitted shorts or even the shorts common in the 80's. Is it masculophobia? Ladies you are going to be shaped like women (flaws and all) and men will be shaped like men. I'm just curious of the vast disparity concerning what we swim in and the lack of choice for men. In response to the first answer. Yes this is what I consider practical swimwear. However I don't expect women to look like a Victoria Secret model to swim in a comfortable swimsuit of her choosing. Men, especially those over the age of 25 are not going to look like a buffed out 17 year old boy. Hmmm, not getting much of a response. Probably because there is no rationale or logical answer. Anyway I just thought I would add this. The problem with swimwear between the genders is that people today are trying to equate "swimming" as foreplay and being sexy, not as good healthy exercise. You may notice, not too many middle-aged men actually swim now days. Why? Because today a sexy image for a man is no longer Tom Selleck or Burt Reynolds but something more in line with a 17 year old boy or something more effeminate. Swimming in trousers is also uncomfortable. So no wonder Americans are getting fat. We have to put on this certain unobtainable image to properly exercise. Once your passed 25 you might as well sit around drink beer, eat hot-dogs and watch sports all day Saturday, since you know longer have the perfect body to swim, run or bicycle in comfortable clothes.

Ladies: Do you not see the double standard regarding your opinions on a mans individual choice of swimwear? You can go to the beach, a swimming pool or a water themed park and you will see a great variety in women's swiwear. You will see tank suits, malliots, tankinis with boy leg or bikini bottoms, sport bikinis and string bikinis which are about nine square inches from full nudity. Even the most conservative of womens swimwear is body forming with full thigh exposure with a micro-mini skirting around the waist. You will also these women in varying shapes, sizes and ages wearing the two piece designs of swimwear. Only in extreme cases will anything negative be said of the woman's personal choice in swimwear. For the record I have no problem of a women wearing a comfortable suit to swim in. It has nothing to do with being sexy, it has to do with being practical and comforable while swimming. Now on the men's side you will see mainly one style - baggy shorts and over the last 20 years they just keep getting longer and baggier. As a result, if you will notice, fewer and fewer men find swimming as recreational passtime fun. Wearing a water logged pair of soggy shorts is not comfortable. However occasionally you will see a maverick of a man who makes an individual choice of wearing the infamous "speedo" (racer style brief), or a square cut or 80's style nylon shorts. He cannot avoid the half-hidden giggles, hairy eyeballs and the occasional verbal jeer. Now for a man do those things to a woman it will be considered socially rude - and it is! However it does not seem to apply the other way. This man chooses to wear a more practical and comfortable garment to swim in but is considered exhibitionist (or otherwise falsely accused) in complete disregard of nearly half of the women strutting around wearing string bikinis. I just had to ask this after seeing answers from a similar question posted here. Can you not see the obvious? Can you not see the double standard?

Question for ladies on swimwear? I need a new swim suit (I am a guy) and have been looking at them in the local flyers. Mens suits are starting at 19.97 but I can buy a womens bottom on sale for $5.00...lots of different colors. Would it be terribly obvious to wear the womens botoms as a suit?

America only: So just how long and baggy are mens swimpants going to get, while womens suits nearly disappear? I am just curious concerning America's bizarre resentment of any man wearing a sensible swimsuit, while women of all ages, shapes and stages of physical fitness are permitted to wear a wide variety of form fitting swimwear including going roughly 3 square inches or so of complete nudity. Meanwhile, the "fashionable" and only acceptable swimsuit for a man is knee length, or if he is really risque mid-thigh. Baggies are not very comfortable to swim in, less so lounging around in after a swim since they take forever and 3 days to dry. Like to to see all the lame points given.

Why are women so two-faced when it comes to men's swimwear? This probably only pertains to North America. I love to swim and I love to spend time sunning at the beach however I do not care to do so wearing to what amounts to trousers. I know why children (GenY) make a big deal - teens are inherently jerks and make a big deal over anything different. However I do not understand adult women. ALL of women's swimwear in it's vast variety is form fitting and leg baring, even the most conservative tanks suits. Womens bikini's are so tiny now they amount to two quarters and a dollar bill tied together with a few flimsy strings. Also these women are not all Victoria Secret models either, exposing their secret flaws and other "secrets". However when a man, such as I with individual taste tries to go swimming in a standard "speedo", or a square cut or even an 80's style swimshort with 2" inseam he can't avoid hearing the half-hidden snickers, whispered comments and occassional jeers. This is a question for the women. Men who oppose - you're just insecure. NO I'm not "gay" (whatever that means nowadays), or homosexual. I'm just an individual who believes in practicality over "style" (which is more often than not impractical). Thanks Mia, you're a sweet person. A question for the ladies only please. What is it about a man’s legs that so many women abhor? This is a follow up question from one I read previously wondering when short shorts would come back for men. The remarks from the women were very peculiar sometimes outright harsh and I’m just wondering why. Back in the 70’s and early 80’s it was no big deal for men to wear shorts with 3 and 4 inch inseams, and athletic shorts could be even shorter. Now it’s hard to find shorts for men with the hem above the knees or 9 inch inseam. For men legs, the thighs in particular, usually are not a problem area as they are with women. Men doff their shirts all the time and our problem area is our mid-section. I’ve seen many pot-bellied men shirtless with not much if any fanfare. Shorts and swimwear for men just seem to get longer and longer, baggier and baggier and it seems mostly to women’s insistence while on the flip side theirs get shorter, tighter and skimpier. Just want to hear the womens view points on this. I possibly overexplained a bit. I'm not really concerned or against anything about women's fashions, All I really want to know is why women seem so opposed to men exposing their leg above the knee.

target swimsuits!? is it just me.. or are their sizes totally wrong? i am usually a size 3 in juniors and 2 or 4 in womens. i had to get a size large bottom for the junior swimwear. and its a little tight! confusion! am i the only one?? i was so confused. i thought i was in the kids section! turns out.. i wasnt. i ended up buying a medium top and a large bottom. then got home and quickly cut the tags off. lol. its all good i guess.
